Alabama Remote Online Notary State Laws
Online notarization is valid and enforceable in Alabama because of interstate recognition.
Even though Alabama does not have a remote online notarization (RON) law, Alabama recognizes notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. Therefore, an online notarization performed by a notary commissioned in a state with a RON law is valid and enforceable in Alabama when performed in accordance with the laws of the notary’s commissioning state. The applicable interstate recognition laws in Alabama are Ala. Code §§ 35-4-26, 35-4-27, & 12-21-4.
Alaska Remote Online Notary State Laws
Alaska authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Alaska Stat. §§ 44.50.075 et seq.
In addition, Alaska recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition law is Alaska Stat. § 09.63.050.
Arizona Remote Online Notary State Laws
Arizona authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Ariz. Rev. Stat. Ann. §§ 41-371 et seq (until June 30, 2022) and Ariz. Rev. Stat. Ann. § 41-263 (effective Jun 30, 2022).
In addition, Arizona recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Ariz. Rev. Stat. §§ 33-411 & 33-501 (until June 30, 2022) and Ariz. Rev. Stat. §§ 41-259 & 33-411 (effective June 30, 2022).
Arkansas Remote Online Notary State Laws
Arkansas authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Ark. Code Ann. §§ 21-14-301 et seq.
In addition, Arkansas recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Ark. Code Ann. §§ 16-45-102, 16-47-103, 16-47-203, 16-47-210, & 18-12-203.
California Remote Online Notary State Laws
Online notarization is valid and enforceable in California because of interstate recognition.
Even though California does not have a remote online notarization (RON) law, California recognizes notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. Therefore, an online notarization performed by a notary commissioned in a state with a RON law is valid and enforceable in California when performed in accordance with the laws of the notary’s commissioning state. The applicable interstate recognition laws in California are Cal. Civ. Code §§ 1182, 1189, & 1193.
Colorado Remote Online Notary State Laws
Colorado authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Colo. Rev. Stat. §§ 24-21-506 & 24-21-514.5.
In addition, Colorado recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Colo. Rev. Stat. §§ 24-21-511, 38-30-126, & 38-35-105.
Connecticut Remote Online Notary State Laws
Online notarization is valid and enforceable in Connecticut because of interstate recognition.
Even though Connecticut does not have a remote online notarization (RON) law, Connecticut recognizes notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. Therefore, an online notarization performed by a notary commissioned in a state with a RON law is valid and enforceable in Connecticut when performed in accordance with the laws of the notary’s commissioning state. The applicable interstate recognition laws in Connecticut are Conn. Gen. Stat. §§ 1-30, 1-57, 47-5a, 47-7, 52-148c.
Delaware Remote Online Notary State Laws
Delaware authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Del. Code Ann. tit. 29, § 4320 (effective August 1, 2023).
In addition, Delaware recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Del. Code Ann. tit. 25, §§ 129 & 171, and tit. 29, § 4324.
Florida Remote Online Notary State Laws
Florida authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Fla. Stat. §§ 117.201 et seq.
In addition, Florida recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Fla. Stat. §§ 92.50, 695.03, & 90.902.
Georgia Remote Online Notary State Laws
Online notarization is valid and enforceable in Georgia because of interstate recognition.
Even though Georgia does not have a remote online notarization (RON) law, Georgia recognizes notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. Therefore, an online notarization performed by a notary commissioned in a state with a RON law is valid and enforceable in Georgia when performed in accordance with the laws of the notary’s commissioning state. The applicable interstate recognition laws in Georgia are Ga. Code Ann. §§ 44-2-21, 44-2-17, 44-14-34, 44-14-62 & 9-10-113.
Hawaii Remote Online Notary State Laws
Hawaii authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Haw. Rev. Stat. § 456-23.
In addition, Hawaii recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Haw. Rev. Stat. §§ 502-45, 502-46, & 621-13.
Idaho Remote Online Notary State Laws
Idaho authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Idaho Code § 51-114A.
In addition, Idaho recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Idaho Code §§ 51-111, 55-805, & 9-1401.
Illinois Remote Online Notary State Laws
Illinois authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to 5 Ill. Comp. Stat. 312/3-105 & 312/6A-101 et seq (effective upon the adoption of rules).
In addition, Illinois recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are 765 Ill. Comp. Stat. 30/2 & 5/20 and 5 Ill. Comp. Stat. 255/6.
Indiana Remote Online Notary State Laws
Indiana authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Ind. Code Ann. §§ 33-42-.05-3 et seq & 33-42-17-1 et seq.
In addition, Indiana recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Ind. Code Ann. §§ 33-42-9-8 & 34-37-1-5.
Iowa Remote Online Notary State Laws
Iowa authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Iowa Code §§ 9B.6 & 9B.14A.
In addition, Iowa recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Iowa Code §§ 9B.11, 558.20, & 622.86.
Kansas Remote Online Notary State Laws
Kansas authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Kan. Stat. Ann. § 53-5a15.
In addition, Kansas recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Kan. Stat. Ann. §§ 53-5a11 & 58-2228.
Kentucky Remote Online Notary State Laws
Kentucky authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Ky. Rev. Stat. Ann. §§ 423.300 et seq.
In addition, Kentucky recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Ky. Rev. Stat. Ann. §§ 423.345, 423.110, & 382.160.
Louisiana Remote Online Notary State Laws
Remote Online Notarization is legal in Louisiana counties for notaries that are commissioned for online notarization.
Remote Online Notarization became legal in Louisiana in February of 2022 with the signing of House Bill 274. Louisiana notaries musct complete an online instruction course a well as pass a quiz. They also must register with an approved Remote Online Notarization Technology Provider.
Maine Remote Online Notary State Laws
Maine authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Me. Stat. tit. 4, § 1915 (effective July 1, 2023).
In addition, Maine recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Me. Stat. tit. 4 § 1011 & 202 (currently in effect) and Me. Stat. tit. 4 § 1911 (effective July 1, 2023).
Maryland Remote Online Notary State Laws
Maryland authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Md. Code Ann., State Gov’t §§ 18-201 et seq.
In addition, Maryland recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition law is Md. Code Ann., State Gov’t § 18-210.
Massachusetts Remote Online Notary State Laws
Online notarization is valid and enforceable in Massachusetts because of interstate recognition.
Even though Massachusetts does not have a remote online notarization (RON) law, Massachusetts recognizes notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. Therefore, an online notarization performed by a notary commissioned in a state with a RON law is valid and enforceable in Massachusetts when performed in accordance with the laws of the notary’s commissioning state. The applicable interstate recognition laws in Massachusetts are Mass. Ann. Laws ch. 183, §§ 30 & 41 and ch. 233, § 73.
Michigan Remote Online Notary State Laws
Michigan authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Mich. Comp. Laws §§ 55.285 to 55.287.
In addition, Michigan recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Mich. Comp. Laws §§ 55.285a, 565.9, 565.10, 565.352, & 565.601.
Minnesota Remote Online Notary State Laws
Minnesota authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Minn. Stat. § 358.645.
In addition, Minnesota recognizes online notarizations that notaries of other states properly perform. The applicable interstate recognition law is Minn. Stat. § 358.61.
Mississippi Remote Online Notary State Laws
Online notarization is valid and enforceable in Mississippi because of interstate recognition.
Even though Mississippi does not have a remote online notarization (RON) law, Mississippi recognizes notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. Therefore, an online notarization performed by a notary commissioned in a state with a RON law is valid and enforceable in Mississippi when performed in accordance with the laws of the notary’s commissioning state. The applicable interstate recognition laws in Mississippi are Miss. Code Ann. §§ 25-34-23, 91-7-33, & 11-1-1.
Missouri Remote Online Notary State Laws
Missouri authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Mo. Rev. Stat. §§ 486.1100 et seq.
In addition, Missouri recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Mo. Rev. Stat. §§ 486.775, 442.150, 442.220, 442.230, & 490.530.
Montana Remote Online Notary State Laws
Montana authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Mont. Code Ann. §§ 1-5-602 et seq.
In addition, Montana recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Mont. Code Ann. § 1-5-605.
Nebraska Remote Online Notary State Laws
Nebraska authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Neb. Rev. Stat. §§ 64-401 to 64-418.
In addition, Nebraska recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Neb. Rev. Stat. §§ 64-201, 76-219, 76-235, 76-242, & 76-264.
Nevada Remote Online Notary State Laws
Nevada authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Nev. Rev. Stat. Ann. §§ 240.181 to 240.206.
In addition, Nevada recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition law is Nev. Rev. Stat. Ann. § 240.164.
New Hampshire Remote Online Notary State Laws
Remote Online Notarization is legal in New Hampshire counties for notaries that are commissioned for online notarization.
New Hampshire hopped on the legality train of Remote Online Notarization has been legal since February 2022. This was ratified with NH Senate Bill 134
New Jersey Remote Online Notary State Laws
New Jersey authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to N.J. Stat. §§ 52:7-10.9 & 52:7-10.10.
In addition, New Jersey recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are N.J. Stat. §§ 52:7-10.14, 46:14-6.1, 41:2-17, & 2A:82-7.
New Mexico Remote Online Notary State Laws
New Mexico authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to N.M. Stat. Ann. § 14-14A-5.
In addition, New Mexico recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition law is N.M. Stat. Ann. § 14-14A-10.
New York Remote Online Notary State Laws
New York authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to N.Y. Exec. Law § 135-C(2).
In addition, New York recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are N.Y. Real Prop. Law §§ 299, 299a, & 309-b and N.Y. Civ. Prac. L.R. § 2309.
North Carolina Remote Online Notary State Laws
Online notarization is valid and enforceable in North Carolina because of interstate recognition.
Even though North Carolina does not have a remote online notarization (RON) law, North Carolina recognizes notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. Therefore, an online notarization performed by a notary commissioned in a state with a RON law is valid and enforceable in North Carolina when performed in accordance with the laws of the notary’s commissioning state. The applicable interstate recognition laws in North Carolina are N.C. Gen. Stat. §§ 10B-20(f), 10B-40(e), & 47-2.2.
North Dakota Remote Online Notary State Laws
North Dakota authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to N.D. Cent. Code § 44-06.1-13.1.
In addition, North Dakota recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition law is N.D. Cent. Code § 44-06.1-10.
Ohio Remote Online Notary State Laws
Ohio authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Ohio Rev. Code Ann. §§ 147.60 et seq.
In addition, Ohio recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Ohio Rev. Code Ann. §§ 147.51 & 5301.06.
Oklahoma Remote Online Notary State Laws
Oklahoma authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Okla. Stat. tit. 49 §§ 201 et seq.
In addition, Oklahoma recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Okla. Stat. tit. 49 § 115 and tit. 16 §§ 35 & 37b.
Oregon Remote Online Notary State Laws
Oregon authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Or. Rev. Stat. § 194.277.
In addition, Oregon recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition law is Or. Rev. Stat. § 194.260.
Pennsylvania Remote Online Notary State Laws
Pennsylvania authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to 57 Pa. Cons. Stat. § 306.1.
In addition, Pennsylvania recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are 57 Pa. Cons. Stat. § 311 and 21 Pa. Stat. Ann. § 381 & 265.
Rhode Island Remote Online Notary State Laws
Online notarization is valid and enforceable in Rhode Island because of interstate recognition.
Even though Rhode Island does not have a remote online notarization (RON) law, Rhode Island recognizes notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. Therefore, an online notarization performed by a notary commissioned in a state with a RON law is valid and enforceable in Rhode Island when performed in accordance with the laws of the notary’s commissioning state. The applicable interstate recognition laws in Rhode Island are R.I. Gen. Laws §§ 42-30.1-10 & 34-12-1 to 34-12-3.
South Carolina Remote Online Notary State Laws
Online notarization is valid and enforceable in South Carolina because of interstate recognition.
Even though South Carolina does not have a remote online notarization (RON) law, South Carolina recognizes notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. Therefore, an online notarization performed by a notary commissioned in a state with a RON law is valid and enforceable in South Carolina when performed in accordance with the laws of the notary’s commissioning state. The applicable interstate recognition laws in South Carolina are S.C. Code Ann. §§ 26-3-20 & 30-5-30.
South Dakota Remote Online Notary State Laws
Online notarization is valid and enforceable in South Dakota because of interstate recognition.
Even though South Dakota does not have a remote online notarization (RON) law, South Dakota recognizes notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. Therefore, an online notarization performed by a notary commissioned in a state with a RON law is valid and enforceable in South Dakota when performed in accordance with the laws of the notary’s commissioning state. The applicable interstate recognition laws in South Dakota are S.D. Codified Laws §§ 18-5-3 & 15-6-28(a).
Tennessee Remote Online Notary State Laws
Tennessee authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Tenn. Code Ann. §§ 8-16-301 et seq.
In addition, Tennessee recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Tenn. Code Ann. §§ 66-22-103, 66-22-107, 66-22-110, 66-22-114, 66-22-115 & 8-16-116.
Texas Remote Online Notary State Laws
Texas authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Tex. Gov't Code §§ 406.101 et seq.
In addition, Texas recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code §§ 121.001, 121.003, & 121.004 and Tex. Gov't Code § 602.003.
Utah Remote Online Notary State Laws
Utah authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Utah Code Ann. §§ 46-1-2(17) et seq.
In addition, Utah recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition law is Utah Code Ann. § 57-2a-3.
Vermont Remote Online Notary State Laws
Vermont authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Vt. Stat. Ann. tit. 26, § 5364(b)(2) once the Vermont Secretary of State adopts rules for online notarizations.
In addition, Vermont recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition law is Vt. Stat. Ann. tit. 26 § 5374.
Virginia Remote Online Notary State Laws
Virginia authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Va. Code Ann. § 47.1-2.
In addition, Virginia recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Va. Code Ann. §§ 55.1-616, 47.1-13.1, 55.1-612, & 49-5.
Washington Remote Online Notary State Laws
Washington authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Wash. Rev. Code Ann. § 42.45.280.
In addition, Washington recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Wash. Rev. Code Ann. §§ 42.45.090 & 64.08.020.
West Virginia Remote Online Notary State Laws
West Virginia authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to W. Va Code §§ 39-4-6 & 39-4-37.
In addition, West Virginia recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are W. Va. Code §§ 39-4-11, 39-1-3, 39-1-10, 57-4-2, & 57-5-9.
Wisconsin Remote Online Notary State Laws
Wisconsin authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Wis. Stat. Ann. § 140.145.
In addition, Wisconsin recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Wis. Stat. Ann. §§ 140.11 & 887.01.
Wyoming Remote Online Notary State Laws
Wyoming authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Wyo. Stat. Ann. § 32-3-111.
In addition, Wyoming recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition law is Wyo. Stat. Ann. § 32-3-106.
